C1 Grammar

  • ADVERBS AND ADVERBIALS

Some students find it really hard to place adverbs or adverbial expressions in the right position in the sentence. Whether you are one of those or just in need of some revision, here is the presentation we discussed in class with some extra exercises.

  • THE CONTINUOUS VS. THE PERFECT ASPECT
Another grammar issue that we are studying in this unit is the difference between continuous and perfect aspects.

Continuous tenses are formed with the verb -BE and the -ING form of the verb. Depending on the time of the action, we use the past (was/were), the present (am/is/are), the future (will be), etc. As we learned in class, the continuous aspect focuses on the duration of an event and it can be used with different meanings. Click here for a more detailed explanation and try the sample sentences here. My advice is that you cover the sentence first and try to fill in the gaps without using the key! Ready to meet the challenge, again?

Perfect tenses are formed with the verb HAVE and the past participle form of the verb. Depending on the time of the action, we use the past (had), the present (have), the future (will have), etc. As we learned in class, the perfect aspect focuses on the completion of an event. It expresses that an action has, had or will have been completed by a specific point in time. For extra exercises on perfect tenses, click here and have fun!

Once you have practised both aspects, try one final exercise at the end of this blog entry and move on to the next unit! Good job!

  • INVERSION
Inversion happens in English for emphasis, dramatic purpose or, and here is what counts, formality! Remember that formal English is our main goal! Only here can you practise inversion! So, watch the video and do the exercises on this site.

  • NON-FINITE CLAUSES
As opposed to finite clauses, a non-finite clause is based on a to-infinitive or a participle. Therefore, it does not show tense or time. There are three main types: to-inf, -ing-, -ed. For a quick grammar explanation, you can have a look here.

You can play the game on finite verbs here entering the code 229672. The game expires by the end of May, so... Hurry!
  • CLEFT SENTENCES

How many of you find them difficult? No way! Click here and just eat them up! When ready, spot the mistakes in the presentation below.

Now you understand cleft-sentences completely, try the exercise below. Drag and drop the words to rearrange each sentence into its correct order.

  • A COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE USE OF ARTICLES IN ENGLISH

Articles are a word that define a noun as specific or unspecific. There are a lot of rules about the use of articles that can sometimes cause a big problem for learners.Having watched the video above (you can also use it to concentrate on good pronunciation habits just like we did in class with the last exercise), you can click here for some guidelines to help you make the right choice. After considering the rules, go to grammar quizzes and click on "articles" to have fun! After that, I hope you can have a  much better idea of how to use A / An / The.
