UNIT 7

BUILDING BRIDGES

There is no better way to start dealing with the topic of INTERNATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS than with a speech by Donald Trump! We will only have a look at the first four minutes in class, but the whole clip from beginning to end is worth watching indeed. No matter whether you are one of Trump's supporters or not, he never leaves anybody indifferent!

WHAT MAKES A GOOD LEADER, THEN?

Now that you have heard about Trump concocting weird lies, get ready to answer the question and think about the personality traits that a good leader must have. Here are the words and expressions my groups have come up with! If you are running out of ideas, try playing our personality traits game again. I am sure it will definitely jog your memory!

STEREOTYPES: A BLESSING OR A CURSE?

Stereotypes are oversimplified assumptions made about members of a particular group. While some members of the group may, in fact, embody the traits of their stereotype, they are not necessarily representative of all the people within that group.

In class, we have been discussing whether stereotypes are rooted in truth, and there has been much debate over different generalizations we sometimes make about different nationalities. Here are some of the ideas we came up with. Do you agree with them? Or are we just perpetuating myths?

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BREXIT: BREXIT FOR DUMMIES!

Click here for an easy guide to understand Brexit. So far, you might already know that the UK is scheduled to leave the EU in January 2020 and this is not very likely to change after the results of the general elections last week. Stopping Brexit will require a change in the law in the UK and the agreement of the rest of the EU members. Have a look at some of the outcomes outlined by The Week magazine and make your own predictions on the future of the country!

CONNECTORS: BREXIT REVISED!

Here is the list of connectors we worked with in class. Try the different game options and learn connectors effectively:

POLITICS: SINGULAR OR PLURAL

Politics can be used with either a singular or a plural verb, depending on the meaning. It is more often treated as singular (Eg. Politics is a dirty game), but when the word is shorthand for political beliefs, it is usually plural (Eg. His politics are not aligned with any party in particular).

Unfortunately for ESL students, politics is not the only plural noun form that conventionally takes a singular verb in most cases, especially words ending in -ics are treated this way: economics, mathematics... Also, several names of countries have plural forms but take singular verbs, and there are many other nouns that resemble plural but have always been singular: summons, series, scissors, species...

Let me take this suitable opportunity to encourage you to revise plural forms in English. You might consider that this issue is as easy as pie for C1 students but do not take it for granted! Check the image and read the explanations here to find out whether you have heard all about singular and plural nouns!

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION: MAN-MADE VS. NATURAL DISASTERS

In a time of increasing number and severity of disasters, global cooperation is more vital than ever before. International disaster management is the linchpin on which effective international coordination depends. That is why experts of different countries should seek to develop relationships to target common goals and to enhance disaster mitigation efforts.

The fact that the world population is rapidly growing together with the ever-increasing reality of natural and man-made disasters is not coincidental. Classifying the different categories of catastrophes that can cause widespread human, material, economic or environmental loss may help governments identify the needs to reduce the aftermath.

Play the game below to name the different disaster types and think about the measures that can be taken to minimize the consequences:
