UNIT 9

LAW AND SOCIETY

We are going to start up this new unit with some word clouds that students will be building up all the way up until the end. Hopefully, when we finish the lessons on law, crime and punishment the resulting images will be a nice bunch of vocabulary on the issue designed by my students themselves!

IMPLEMENTING VOCABULARY

As usual, revising and implementing new vocabulary is the right way to start. Check all the definitions we have been working with in class and then try the Hangman Challenge, the Horse Race and the Quizlet below (which also includes the vocabulary you worked with Ross in class this week). How did it go? Are you a law and crime vocabulary genius?

LISTENING: CRIME NEWS

Listen to the news items here and choose the best answer for each of the questions. As it should be an exam-like situation, try to listen to each extract just twice and let me know how you did!

VIDEO LISTENING: JEREMY IRONS TALKS ABOUT DEATH PENALTY

Here is a very interesting video on arguments against death penalty given by actor Jeremy Irons. His work with Amnesty International is highly renowned and I would like you to listen to him and make your own opinion on the issue.

You can check vocabulary, expressions and the Spanish translation from the video here. Most of the collocations he uses are deeply connected to the law and crime glossary we are building up in this unit so, I am definitely sure you will find it very helpful.

MULTIPLE CHOICE LISTENING: ONLINE CRIME

You can listen to the clip from class here. See if you can spot the words on the photocopy as you listen: dire, discard, ferret, hush up, hardened, outsmart, scam, sharp-witted, stalk, unsettle . Good luck!

JUVENILE CRIME

Juvenile crime has increasingly been a major concern since juvenile violence rates peaked in the early 1990s. Although these rates seem to have fallen from the early noughties, this decrease has not alleviated the concern. Many countries are taking tougher legislative stances towards these youth. However, policies on juvenile delinquency must often struggle with the appropriate balance of concern over the healthy development of adolescents who break the law and the public desire to punish criminals. This is why , in case you are interested in expanding your knowledge on juvenile delinquency, it might be interested to read the article here and notice useful expressions, vocabulary and structures regarding the issue.

Once you are ready, practise your reading comprehension skill with the mulitple choice task here.
